How this pace calculator works
The calculator converts the entered distance to kilometers and miles, converts the entered time to seconds, then divides time by distance for pace and distance by elapsed hours for speed.
Pace vs speed
Pace is time per unit of distance, such as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. Speed is distance per hour, such as kilometers per hour or miles per hour. This tool reports both without judging performance.
What this tool does not include
This calculator does not create training plans, prescribe exercise intensity, diagnose fitness, use GPS tracking or provide medical advice.
Key terms and assumptionsFormula notes, key terms, source assumptions and limits used in this calculator.
- Distance conversion
- Miles convert to kilometers using 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers. Meters convert using 1000 meters = 1 kilometer.
- Elapsed time
- Hours, minutes and seconds are added together as elapsed time. Blank time fields are treated as 0, but total time must be greater than 0.
- Pace and speed
- Pace is time divided by distance. Speed is distance divided by elapsed hours.
- General fitness math
- This tool provides distance and time calculations only. It does not judge performance or prescribe training.

FAQs
How do I calculate pace?
Divide total time by distance. The calculator formats that result as time per mile and time per kilometer.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per unit of distance. Speed is distance per unit of time.
Can I use miles and still see pace per kilometer?
Yes. The calculator converts distance and shows both pace units.
Can I enter seconds?
Yes. Hours, minutes and seconds are supported. Minutes and seconds must each stay below 60.
What happens if time is zero?
The calculator shows an error because pace and speed cannot be calculated from zero time.
Is this only for running?
No. It can be used for walking, cycling, rowing or other distance-and-time activities.
Does this create a training plan?
No. It only calculates pace and speed from the values entered.
Can I copy the result?
Yes. The copy summary includes distance, time, pace and speed.
