How this fuel cost calculator works
The calculator uses the distance, fuel efficiency and fuel price you enter to estimate fuel used and fuel cost. It supports miles or kilometres, mpg or litres per 100 km, and per-gallon or per-litre fuel prices.
MPG vs litres per 100 km
MPG estimates how far a vehicle travels on one gallon of fuel. Litres per 100 km estimates how much fuel is used to travel 100 kilometres. Choose the unit that matches the figure you have.
What this calculator does not include
This focused calculator estimates fuel only. It does not include tolls, parking, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, tax, route changes or live fuel prices.
Key terms and assumptionsShort notes about fuel-only estimates, fuel efficiency units, user-entered prices and region settings.
- Fuel only
- The result estimates fuel used and fuel cost. It does not include tolls, parking, maintenance, insurance, depreciation or route changes.
- Fuel efficiency
- Use mpg or L/100 km depending on the efficiency number you have.
- Fuel price
- Fuel price is user-entered and not a live price lookup.
- Region settings
- Region settings change defaults, labels, units and currency formatting only. They do not convert exchange rates.

FAQs
How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Enter the distance, fuel efficiency and fuel price. The calculator estimates fuel used and the resulting fuel cost.
Can I use miles or kilometres?
Yes. You can use miles or kilometres, and choose mpg or litres per 100 km for fuel efficiency.
Does this use live fuel prices?
No. Enter the fuel price you want to use.
What if I want a round trip?
Use the round-trip option or enter the full return distance.
Does this include maintenance or depreciation?
No. It estimates fuel cost only. Use Total Car Cost or Car Depreciation for broader ownership assumptions.
Is 0 distance allowed?
Yes. It returns 0 fuel cost and explains that distance is 0.
Do region settings convert currency?
No. Region settings change labels, defaults, units and formatting only. They do not convert currencies.
