General estimate only

This calculator provides general estimates only. It is not financial, tax, legal, lending, vehicle, environmental or investment advice. It does not use live fuel or electricity prices, incentives, depreciation, insurance, finance costs, taxes, battery degradation or resale value unless entered separately.

How this gas vs electric car cost calculator works

The calculator estimates annual gas or petrol fuel cost and electric charging cost from the distance, efficiency and energy prices entered. It can also show a simple break-even period when an upfront price difference is entered.

Fuel, charging and efficiency assumptions

Fuel cost uses mpg or litres per 100 km. Electric cost uses miles per kWh or kWh per 100 km, a home/public charging mix and a charging-loss allowance.

What this calculator does not include

This is a general estimate only. It does not use live fuel or electricity prices, model incentives, include insurance, calculate tax rules, predict depreciation or resale value, estimate emissions or recommend a vehicle.

Key terms and assumptionsShort notes about charging cost, fuel cost, break-even, maintenance assumptions and region settings.
Electric charging cost
EV energy use is estimated from annual distance and EV efficiency, then adjusted for charging loss and blended charging prices.
Gas or petrol fuel cost
Fuel use is estimated from annual distance and the fuel efficiency entered.
Break-even
Break-even uses the optional upfront price difference and estimated annual running-cost saving.
Maintenance difference
A positive maintenance difference is treated as an annual EV saving. A negative value can represent an extra EV cost.
Region settings
Region settings change labels, defaults, units and currency formatting only. They do not convert exchange rates.
General estimate
The result excludes live prices, incentives, insurance, depreciation, finance costs, taxes, emissions and resale value unless entered separately.

FAQs

Is this the same as an EV vs petrol cost calculator?

Yes. 'Gas vs electric' and 'EV vs petrol' describe the same kind of comparison. The wording depends on your region.

Does this use live gas or electricity prices?

No. Enter the prices you want to compare.

Does this include public charging?

Yes, if you enter a public charging price and home charging share.

Does this include maintenance?

Only if you enter an annual maintenance difference. Positive values are treated as an estimated EV saving.

Does this include purchase price?

Only through the optional upfront price difference.

Why is my break-even not available?

Break-even may not be available if there is no annual saving or no upfront premium to recover.

Are EV savings guaranteed?

No. Prices, efficiency and driving patterns can change.

Does this include emissions?

No. It is a cost calculator, not an emissions model.

Is this car-buying advice?

No. It is a general cost comparison based on user-entered assumptions.
